Promoting replies / demoting posts on P2?

Would anyone else find it useful to be able to promote a reply as a separate post, and to demote a post to a reply under another post? Context & explanation, plus a technical update, follow.

I see the chronological flow of posts on a P2 as being useful for tracking the evolution of projects or helping new members get up to speed. Along the way, however, people unfamiliar with the system may post replies or snippets of thoughts in a way that might fit better as replies under posts. On the flip side, a reply may be so well thought out that it seems a shame for it to be hidden from the main view under another post. So part of the issue here is another question: Is this an issue anyone else has observed?

Obviously one solution is to manually shift these as appropriate (or delete posts that are unintentional non-sequiteurs), but that introduces other problems (whoever makes the shift is the “author” and the new post/reply will have a new timestamp). So I wondered if it might be possible to have a simple way to recategorize a reply as a post, or post as reply in the flow.

I understand from Jon in an email exchange that this is not currently technically possible. So, this post is mainly to sound out whether the concept is one that makes sense to others, and thus should be considered for development.

Examples in other worlds

The simplest example of the promote/demote concept is of course a dynamic list (ordered or unordered) such as one has in a wordprocessor or many other programs like WordPress itself: typically tab to demote, and alt-tab to promote.

Another example of promotion is the feature current on LinkedIn where, upon making a long reply to another post, one is automatically given the option to “start a new conversation” by taking the reply up a level as a separate post.

URL Link Embedding Issue

I’ve been seeing this happen intermittently…,

when I want to embed a URL in a text element, I highlight the text, click the link icon (or ctrl+k) in Text Block Editor ribbon, then I paste the URL and hit enter but it doesn’t take. It’s as if the action never took place. When it happens I’m forced to start again, insert the link and either click the URL button or the ‘open in new tab button’ and again, it closes. I must then re-open to click “open in a new tab” to complete. it’s a 3 step process. In the past I’ve been able to do this via a single set of actions. Anyone else experiencing this?

New P2 formats

@jonburke, I’ve not created a new P2 for a few months. Clearly good things happening with product evolution but my use case is focused on collaboration (as we’ve discussed) and I require both simple set up and ease of use for my clients who are usually not bloggers.

The value prop for me has been and is:

  • Prioritizing team communications and collaborations on projects
  • Planning, organizing, and sharing project status
  • Documenting opportunities and decisions
  • Asynchronous communications with geographically distributed teams
  • Leverage as a knowledgebase on an engagement via Search

I tried creating a P2 for a new client today. First one I’d done since October, 2021. Skipping Theme selection didn’t go well so I went back and selected the best option I could find – one from Automattic that promoted simplicity in design and set up and was neither.

If getting the basics requires a paid plan, I have no issue with that but want to be certain the P2 trajectory doesn’t lose its original use as a communications/collaboration tool for projects. For my needs I would prefer the more traditional theme like the screenshots still presented on and throughout the P2–The New Working website, like this:

And this….,

My clients, as you know are generally not bloggers but I’ve developed a good toolset that combines P2, Slack channel (if in doubt P2 it!) Google Workspace which has virtually eliminated email communications. Thought I found my comfort zone but change is inevitable, I guess.

Welcome any/all feedback from the community. Thx M
